Thumb Land Conservancy names new preserve in honor of Full Circle

In 1990, three years after Srs. Veronica and Concepcion came to Port Huron, they had the inspiration -the call- to begin a new ministry centered on raising consciousness about the environment and doing something to protect it.

Not long after the Province of the USA approved their proposal to begin “Full Circle EcoHouse of Prayer.”  The Great Lakes were polluted by all kinds of chemicals at that time, and people were advised not to eat the fish of Lake Huron. Purple loosestrife grew everywhere, phragmites replaced native plants and reduced water in ponds, swamps, etc.…they wanted to do something!

They don’t remember how they got in contact with Bill Collins and two of his friends, who were passionate and very knowledgeable about the environment especially in the Blue Water area of southeast Michigan. Their friendship enriches them to this day.

Recently, Bill sent the following email:

Veronica and Concepcion:
We (Thumb Land Conservancy) acquired a new Nature Preserve in August through the State Tax Auction. It’s 8.5 acres in Kimball Township. I proposed to the board that we name it Full Circle EcoHouse of Prayer. They all voted yes, so, unless you don’t accept the name will be “Full Circle Nature Sanctuary.” Please, let me know if this is OK.

Thumb Land Conservancy News, 2022 September 12

Two New TLC Preserves, Kimball and Clyde Townships, Saint Clair County

The TLC acquired two new preserves in the August 11 State land auction for Saint Clair, Sanilac, Lapeer, and Macomb Counties. They aren't big but contain valuable habitat and were part of the Port Huron State Game Area. The State of Michigan determined that these were surplus parcels. We are thankful that we can keep them in the public domain.

The largest parcel we acquired is 8.5 acres of forest at the southwest corner of Flinchbaugh Road and Barth Road in Kimball Township, Saint Clair County, outlined in yellow on the following aerial photograph. The parcel is completely forested and located in an area of well-document Painted trillium occurrence, a Michigan Endangered wildflower that is now recorded only from Saint Clair County in all of Michigan.

You might enjoy driving along the state game area, a hilly and curving drive which is especially beautiful in autumn or perhaps visiting the state game area, and the new sanctuary or perhaps even participating in clean ups when scheduled. In the meantime, please rejoice with us and TLC, who are preserving so many precious natural sites in this part of Michigan.
